DIYHR - A Small Business Evolution

I have often said that when it comes to Human Resources Management, small businesses have been left behind. Case in point – most formal HR education and training programs focus on big business topics like compensation and benefits, job classification, leadership, recruitment, process improvement and now technology including artificial intelligence. Implementing any of these systems usually takes capital (money), dedicated resources (people), time and knowledge (specialized information). They also need a critical mass of incidents (common jobs or tasks or events) where economies of scale can create value. These are all things that small business of 5 – 25 employees do not have. Furthermore, if you operate a labour intensive (rough and tumble) small business, you are at a further disadvantage. That is that most of your staff are directly related to revenue generation and to assign one of them HR work, means that you are losing income as well as incurring expenses. HR is a challenge for small businesses.

But, what if I said there was another way? What if it was inexpensive, even free? What if I said that I have distilled the essence of HR down to a small set of activities, that are appropriate for small businesses, that yield big value against their small investment of time.
